Volt Gelderland on the road: working visits in September

We went on two working visits in recent weeks. At the Ministry of Defence, we discussed the National Programme for Defence, and during the European Para Dressage Championships in Ermelo, we talked about the opportunities and challenges within adapted sports. Two very different visits, but both valuable in gaining a better understanding of the issues at stake in Gelderland and the people who work on them every day.

Working visit to the Ermelo barracks
Dennis and David recently paid a working visit to the barracks in Ermelo. During this visit, both the municipality of Ermelo and the Ministry of Defence explained the consequences of the National Programme for Defence Space. This concerned not only the plans for the barracks themselves, but also the broader effects in the region, such as in Barneveld and Apeldoorn.

The Ministry of Defence emphasised that the cooperation with the province, the municipality of Ermelo and other partners is going well and reassured us about the effects of the programme. After the substantive discussions, Dennis and David also had a unique experience: a ride in an army vehicle across the training ground. It was great fun and a special experience.

It was an inspiring working visit, and we look forward to continuing our cooperation with the Ministry of Defence.

Dennis at the European Para Dressage Championships
On Friday, 5 September, Dennis was invited by the Gelderland Sports Agreement to attend the European Para Dressage Championships. In addition to the impressive competitions, the day was mainly devoted to the challenges and opportunities within adapted sports.

Unique athletes (people with disabilities who showcase their talents) often encounter barriers. These include, for example, the financing of the sport itself, but also regulations such as the Wmo (Social Support Act) and practical problems such as travelling to sports locations outside their own municipality. During interesting lectures, initiatives that contribute to solutions were shared. In addition, discussions were held with partners and stakeholders about how we can better support and raise the profile of sport, elite sport and adapted sports.

The special added value of sports involving animals for people with mental or intellectual disabilities was also considered. The positive effects are clearly significant, provided, of course, that this is done within clear guidelines that guarantee the welfare of the animals.

It was an inspiring day, thanks in part to the valuable discussions and the beautiful weather.
