Congo is rijk aan grondstoffen. Maar achter die natuurlijke bodemschatten schuilt een rauwe realiteit: het lijden van miljoenen mensen in Congo. Terwijl het oog van de wereld gericht is op het Midden-Oosten, verdwijnt Congo verder uit beeld. Op maandag 14 juli duiken we met Ewing Amadi Salumu (journalist en oprichter van RuziziNL en lid van het Mayele Institute, een denktank van Congolese strategen) en Gaetan Mbwete (Stichting Wij Zijn Congolezen) in het vergeten conflict dat mede mogelijk wordt gemaakt door Europese belangen. Want Europa speelt geen neutrale rol. Door handelsbelangen, stilzwijgende steun en mineralendeals kijkt Europa de andere kant op.

En dat zijn politieke keuzes; keuzes die anders moeten en kunnen.

De verkiezingen komen eraan. Als we willen dat het debat meer omvat dan alleen migratie, dan moet het ook over Congo gaan. Over de werkelijke gevolgen van (Europees) beleid buiten onze grenzen. Congo is rich in natural resources. But behind these natural treasures lies a harsh reality: the suffering of millions of people in Congo. While the world's attention is focused on the Middle East, Congo continues to fade from view.

On Monday, July 14, we dive into the forgotten conflict with Ewing Amadi Salumu (journalist, founder of RuziziNL, and member of the Mayele Institute, a think tank of Congolese strategists) and Gaetan Mbwete (Stichting Wij Zijn Congolezen). This conflict is made possible by Europe, and Europe is not playing a neutral role. Through trade deals, silent support, and mineral agreements, Europe looks the other way.

These are political choices. Choices that can and must be made differently.
