Verslag Volt Academy: Europa moet een antwoord vinden op Trump

Afgelopen week zat het partijkantoor tot de nok toe vol. Geboeid luisterden we naar Andrew Gawthorpe, een expert op het gebied van Amerikaanse politiek. Een optimistisch gevoel hielden we er niet aan over. Wat wel duidelijk werd: Europa moet naar alternatieven zoeken voor de relatie met de Verenigde Staten en zich veel minder afhankelijk opstellen.
Tijdens de Volt Academy gaf Gawthorpe inzicht in de invloed die de terugkeer van Trump zal hebben op de trans-Atlantische betrekkingen. Gawthorpe benadrukte dat uiteindelijk de economie voor veel kiezers de doorslag gaf om op Trump te stemmen. Ironisch genoeg zal zijn beleid er niet voor zorgen dat die economie daadwerkelijk verbetert. Het beleid dat Trump voorstaat, biedt geen oplossing. Integendeel, zijn plannen om importtarieven te verhogen zullen de inflatie alleen maar aanwakkeren.
Voor Europa betekent deze herverkiezing van Trump dat we niet langer kunnen vertrouwen op de VS als stabiele bondgenoot. We moeten onze eigen koers bepalen, op Europees niveau veel meer samenwerken en een duidelijk alternatief bieden voor het onvoorspelbare beleid van de VS in de komende vier jaar. Hoe dat antwoord eruit moet zien? Dat blijft een vraag, maar één ding is zeker: de oplossing ligt in Europa.

Volt Academy Report: Europe must find a response to Trump
Last week, the party office was packed to the brim. Fascinated, we listened to Andrew Gawthorpe, an expert on US politics. It did not leave us feeling optimistic. What became clear: Europe must look for alternatives to its relationship with the United States and be much less dependent.
At the Volt Academy, Gawthorpe provided an insight into how Trump's return will affect transatlantic relations. Gawthorpe stressed that ultimately economy was the deciding factor for many voters to vote for Trump. Ironically, his policies will not improve that economy. The policies advocated by Trump do not offer a solution. On the contrary, his plans to increase import tariffs will only fuel inflation.
For Europe, this re-election of Trump means that we can no longer rely on the US as a stable ally. We need to set our own course, cooperate much more at the European level and offer a clear alternative to unpredictable US policies over the next four years. What that answer should look like? That remains a question, but one thing is certain: the solution lies in Europe.
