Op 18 maart organiseert Volt DH Academy een avond met Benjamin Duerr, auteur van De droom van Den Haag: de Haagse Vredesconferenties en het ontstaan van een nieuwe wereldorde.

Met de huidige geopolitieke spanningen en de staat van de wereld is dit onderwerp relevanter dan ooit. In tijden van conflict en onzekerheid is het versterken van internationale (en Europese) instituties cruciaal om stabiliteit, vrede en rechtvaardigheid te waarborgen.

Duerr onderzoekt hoe de vredesconferenties van 1899 en 1907 de basis legden voor de internationale rechtsorde van vandaag. Hoewel sommigen deze als mislukt beschouwen, is Den Haag als stad van vrede en recht op de kaart gezet en het fundament gelegd voor de huidige gerechtshoven en tribunalen.

Tijdens deze Volt Academy bespreken we hoe deze historische lessen ons kunnen helpen bij de internationale uitdagingen van nu. Hoe kunnen instituties zoals het Internationaal Strafhof en de EU versterkt worden? En welke rol kunnen ngo’s en de gemeente Den Haag hierin spelen?

Volt DH Academy: Third Hague Peace Conference?

On March 18, Volt DH Academy is hosting an evening with Benjamin Duerr, author of The Dream of The Hague: The Hague Peace Conferences and the Birth of a New World Order.

With today’s geopolitical tensions and the state of the world, this topic is more relevant than ever. In times of conflict and uncertainty, strengthening international (and European) institutions is crucial to ensuring stability, peace, and justice.

Duerr explores how the 1899 and 1907 peace conferences laid the foundation for today’s international legal order. While some consider them failures, they firmly established The Hague as the city of peace and justice and paved the way for today’s courts and tribunals.

During this Volt Academy session, we will discuss how these historical lessons can help us tackle today’s global challenges. How can institutions like the International Criminal Court and the EU be strengthened? And what role can NGOs and the Municipality of The Hague play in this?
