What motivates me to be politically active for Volt?

I am convinced of the power of Europe and of a politics that looks beyond the Netherlands. Throughout my career in IT, I have worked on connecting systems, people and ideas. I apply the same principle to our society: how do we create a future that is sustainable, fair and innovative? Volt appeals to me because it is a party that is not stuck in old patterns, but is pragmatic and dares to innovate. I don't just want to talk about change – I want to actively contribute to it, with my experience as an activist and problem solver.

What do I want to achieve in my municipality?

Leiden faces major challenges: the housing market, sustainability and maintaining social cohesion. My goal is to tackle these issues with a pragmatic and people-oriented approach. That means:

  • Sustainability as a priority: I have been committed to the climate for many years because I know that today's choices determine the future. I therefore want to work towards a greener city, in which we use energy, space and water wisely.

  • A city for everyone: Leiden must remain a place where students, families and the elderly feel at home. This requires creative solutions for housing, safety and social connection.

  • Cooperation as the key: As an architect, I know that the best solutions arise when you listen to all those involved – residents, entrepreneurs and experts. I want to build those bridges. I also believe that you can achieve a great deal by thinking together, for example within a citizens' council.

How do I distinguish myself from others?

My background is unique: I combine technical expertise with social engagement. I have learned to design complex systems and find solutions that work – not only in theory, but also in practice. In addition, I bring an international perspective to the table, having lived in Switzerland for many years and feeling strongly connected to European issues. With both feet firmly planted in society, I am someone who wants to make a difference.

Which issue is closest to my heart?

For me, climate and social justice are inextricably linked. I have seen how climate change hits the most vulnerable hardest and how political choices are often too short-sighted. As an activist with Extinction Rebellion and the “Leiden Sneller Duurzaam” network, I have learned that it is not enough to protest; you also have to build alternatives. I want Leiden to be a city where sustainability and solidarity go hand in hand, for example by tackling energy poverty.

What do I want members to remember most about me?

As a person, I am pragmatic, curious and committed. I like to listen, but I don't hesitate to ask difficult questions. As a candidate, I want you to see me as someone who not only talks, but also acts – who uses his experience and knowledge to make Leiden a better place. And who, despite being 62 years old, remains full of energy and continues to fight for a city that is sustainable and looks to the future with optimism.
