10. Celeste van der Kamp
I have been able to call Leiden my home for three years now, and I can say with complete conviction that it quickly became my home. My name is Celeste van der Kamp, I am 22 years old, and I am currently studying for a Master's degree in European Union Studies at Leiden University. As a history student, I quickly got to know the city inside out. I am active in my study association and in a student association here in Leiden. I am half Greek and, thanks to my mixed background, I have a great love for Europe and all its different cultures.
I have been a member of Volt for about two years now, and my interest in European politics continues to grow. During my internship at a public affairs agency in The Hague, I came into direct contact with municipal politics. Partly because of that internship, I learned how valuable local politics can be, and how your choices can make a concrete difference and have an impact.
Important issues within the municipality for me include the realisation of affordable and accessible housing, the promotion of a liveable and green city, and ensuring safety in public spaces. As a student, I see first-hand how difficult it is to find suitable, affordable housing. This has major consequences for study, well-being and equal opportunities. It is therefore important not only to build more, but also to do so in a sustainable and future-oriented way. In addition, we must also pay close attention to problems such as the pressure to sublet rooms.
To promote a liveable and green city, we must work together with Leiden residents, local businesses and knowledge institutions to take concrete steps to make our city greener and more pleasant. I believe it is important that we make use of European knowledge and subsidies to ensure that innovative projects meet the needs of Leiden.
As a young woman, I also understand how important it is to ensure safety in the city, while at the same time leaving room for an accessible nightlife. Safety on the streets is essential, but digital safety and independence also deserve my express attention. Especially now that communication in our society is increasingly taking place online, it is important that residents are protected in every environment, both physical and digital.
Furthermore, I believe it is important to pay attention to diverse groups in Leiden, including students, the elderly, native Leideners and internationals. I look forward to contributing to municipal projects that connect these groups to promote an inclusive city. All in all, I hope to contribute to the ideals that Volt stands for with a youthful and fresh perspective, so that together we can make Leiden even more beautiful.
