Sikhs ontmoeten Bahá’ís, Volt Den Haag was erbij

De avond bracht verhalen van twee mensen: Gurbir Singh, namens de Haagse Sikh-gemeenschap en Aram Yazdani namens de Bahá’ís. Hun verhalen waren persoonlijk, eerlijk en mooi. Gurbir vertelde hoe hij zijn leven radicaal veranderde toen hij het Sikh-geloof omarmde, van uiterlijk vertoon naar dienstbaarheid en innerlijke rust. Hij sprak ook over discriminatie en hoe hij leert te reageren met uitleg en begrip in plaats van boosheid. Aram deelde haar verhaal over vervolging, identiteit en het belang van universele menselijke waarden. Bahá’ís, die in Iran nog steeds zwaar worden onderdrukt, zetten zich wereldwijd in voor vrede en gemeenschapszin, iets wat ook in Den Haag zichtbaar is.

Het was leuk om te zien dat er echt een klik was tussen deze twee verschillende geloofsgemeenschappen. Hun verhalen bleken veel overeenkomsten te hebben: dienstbaarheid aan de samenleving, het belang van gelijkwaardigheid en de overtuiging dat je de wereld beter moet achterlaten dan je haar aantrof. Dat deze mensen actief zijn in Den Haag en zich inzetten voor onze stad, is iets om trots op te zijn.

Vanuit Volt Den Haag vonden wij het bijzonder om bij deze avond aanwezig te zijn. Dit soort ontmoetingen maken Den Haag nog leuker dan zij al is. Ze laten zien hoe divers onze stad is en hoe belangrijk het is om ook díe verhalen een podium te geven.

Sikhs Meet Bahá’ís – Volt The Hague Was There

On Thursday, April 3rd, Volt The Hague attended the storytelling evening Sikhs Meet Bahá’ís, organized by Haags Verhaal. It was a special encounter between two spiritual communities in our city that are still unfamiliar to many. The evening featured the personal stories of two speakers: Gurbir Singh, representing the Sikh community of The Hague, and Aram Yazdani, representing the Bahá’ís. Their stories were personal, honest, and inspiring.

Gurbir shared how he radically changed his life when he embraced Sikhism, shifting from materialism to a life of service and inner peace. He also spoke about the discrimination he faces and how he has learned to respond not with anger, but with openness and explanation. Aram shared her story of persecution, identity, and the importance of universal human values. Bahá’ís, who are still severely persecuted in Iran, work around the world to promote peace and community, something visible in The Hague as well.

It was heartwarming to see how naturally these two very different faith communities connected. Their stories turned out to have a lot in common: service to others, equality, and the shared belief that we should leave the world better than we found it. The fact that they are active in our city and contribute to its well-being is something we can all be proud of.

For Volt The Hague, it was a meaningful and memorable evening to be part of. Events like these make The Hague even more vibrant and exciting. They highlight the city’s diversity and the importance of giving all voices a platform.
