Volt Amsterdam’s response to the 2026-2030 coalition agreement

Amsterdam faces major challenges: finding an affordable home has become impossible for too many people, many Amsterdammers feel less safe on the streets, and more and more young people are wondering whether there is still room in their own city to build a future. Overall, we can be satisfied with this coalition agreement, but it is still too cautious. That is why Volt will work to make it even more progressive and future-oriented.

Installation of Volt Amsterdam in the city council: stronger than ever!

Today, the municipal council for 2026-2030 was installed, and Volt Amsterdam is continuing stronger than ever with 5.1% of the vote.With two seats, represented by Juliet Broersen and Pim van Burk, and, for the first time, representation in four district councils, we are ready to build the future of Amsterdam.

Making period symptoms a topic of conversation at work

Amsterdam wants to make period and menopause symptoms easier to discuss in the workplace. Following an initiative by Volt councillor Itay Garmy and GroenLinks councillor Kris van der Veen, the municipal executive has approved a proposal that creates more room for tailored support for employees experiencing these symptoms.

"Bekend maakt bemind 2.0": why meeting each other matters

In September 2023, Itay Garmy (Volt) and Sheher Khan (DENK) introduced the initiative “Bekend maakt Bemind”. Their idea was simple: bring Amsterdammers into contact with one another, especially when they are different. Since October 7, 2023, this has only become more important. The war in Israel and Gaza has led to increased tensions in the Netherlands as well. In schools, community centers, and on the streets, it became clear how quickly conversations break down, or stop happening altogether.

Volt Amsterdam presents innovative proposals in its election program for a city that builds your future. From a floating student campus to a debt-free generation: Volt wants to implement what already works in other European cities but is still missing in Amsterdam. Because good ideas know no borders.

Making shared housing possible again

Hundreds of rooms in Amsterdam stand empty, while young people are unable to find an affordable place to live. Volt wants the return of friends contracts. Thanks to the proposal by Juliet Broersen, the municipality is now investigating how this can become possible again, so that students and first-time buyers can live together safely and affordably. More Student Housing in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is facing a growing shortage of student housing, while demand among young people remains high. With this amendment, submitted by Juliet Broersen in collaboration with other councillors, it is proposed to free up additional funds to explore how the construction of student housing can be restarted. The aim is to generate short-term insights and provide an extra impulse for new developments.

Volt calls for action for homeless families and women in Amsterdam

Over the past months, Juliet Broersen (Volt), Judith Krom (PvdD), and Fatihya Abdi (PvdA) have worked to improve support for homeless families, with particular attention to women who end up on the streets with their children, often as a result of domestic violence.

Amsterdam introduces bereavement leave after early pregnancy loss

During the city council meeting of 9 July 2025, Juliet Broersen (Volt) submitted a motion together with the Labour Party (PvdA) to grant parents the right to paid bereavement leave after a miscarriage before 24 weeks. With this proposal, Amsterdam can lead the way in the Netherlands in recognising early pregnancy loss and giving grieving parents the support they deserve.

This initiative makes international train travel more comfortable and cheaper

You're standing at Utrecht Central Station. You open an app, choose a destination - Paris, Berlin, or maybe Barcelona - and within a few clicks you have a ticket. That sounds like a dream, but according to Volt MP Marieke Koekkoek, it is feasible. With her initiative paper All signals on Green, she is making international train travel more attractive. ‘It is about making the train not only greener, but also the cheapest and most comfortable choice.’

General Political Considerations 2024

Budget Amsterdam 2025

Over the past three years, we have consistently advocated for a future-proof budget for Amsterdam. Fortunately, we now finally see choices being made with a view to the long term. Although Amsterdam is moving forward progressively in Budget 2025, we remain critical of important issues such as the maintenance of public space, the affordability of housing for starters and young families, and the low-threshold accessibility of municipal services.

Discussion of the Referendum on the Hoofdgroenstructuur (Main Green Structure) Policy Framework in the City Council on 26-27 June 2024

On 6 June 2024, we, the people of Amsterdam, went to the polls to vote in a referendum. You could vote for or against the new policy framework for the Hoofdgroenstructuur, and 59.1% voted against it. During the council meeting on June 26 and 27, the city council discussed the referendum's outcome.

Referendum Main Green Structure Policy

On June 6th, we will not only be voting for the European Parliament but also for a local referendum. This referendum asks whether you are for or against the new “Main Green Structure Policy”. This policy concerns the protection of green spaces in the city. We believe it is important that all Amsterdammers form an informed opinion.
