Today, on International Students’ Day, we celebrate what makes studying in Amsterdam so special, but we also look at what still needs to improve. Because let’s be honest: finding a room is almost impossible, rents are absurdly high, and the mental pressure keeps growing. That is why Volt is working hard to change that for you!

On Wednesday, 9 October, Amsterdam City Council held the General Political Considerations, during which Juliet Broersen shared her vision for the city.  Read her contribution below.

Over the past three years, we have consistently advocated for a future-proof budget for Amsterdam. Fortunately, we now finally see choices being made with a view to the long term. Although Amsterdam is moving forward progressively in Budget 2025, we remain critical of important issues such as the maintenance of public space, the affordability of housing for starters and young families, and the low-threshold accessibility of municipal services.

On 6 June 2024, we, the people of Amsterdam, went to the polls to vote in a referendum. You could vote for or against the new policy framework for the Hoofdgroenstructuur , and 59.1% voted against it. During the council meeting on June 26 and 27, the city council discussed the referendum's outcome.

On June 6th, we will not only be voting for the European Parliament but also for a local referendum. This referendum asks whether you are for or against the new “Main Green Structure Policy”. This policy concerns the protection of green spaces in the city. We believe it is important that all Amsterdammers form an informed opinion. Therefore, in this blog, you will find more explanation about the referendum and our advice: vote against it!

Today, the alderman presented the 2024 Spring Memorandum. This document outlines changes compared to the budget, such as financial windfalls or decisions to invest more in certain areas. In this blog, you can read our initial reaction to the Spring Memorandum: we are pleased with the investments but have concerns about the long term.

After two years, Volt is now halfway through its first term in the council. While in the first year we focused on building the faction, gaining expertise on different issues, and learning the workings of the council, this year allowed us to further build upon a strong foundation. In this letter you will see some of the things we have done in the council and for the city.

This year, we can once again head to the polls! On June 6, 2024, we will be voting for the European Parliament. The European Parliament represents European citizens and influences EU legislation and policies - making it very important! Read below how you can vote in these elections.
