Making period symptoms a topic of conversation at work
Amsterdam wants to make period and menopause symptoms easier to discuss in the workplace. Following an initiative by Volt councillor Itay Garmy and GroenLinks councillor Kris van der Veen, the municipal executive has approved a proposal that creates more room for tailored support for employees experiencing these symptoms.

The proposal introduces the possibility of flexible working arrangements, such as working from home or adjusting working hours when symptoms make it difficult to work as usual. It also aims to ensure that managers and confidential advisers are better equipped to discuss these issues and provide support.
In addition, the municipality will explore where free menstrual products can be made available to employees. The proposal does not introduce specific menstrual leave, but focuses on practical support, understanding, and flexibility in the workplace.
“This proposal is about recognition,” said initiator Itay Garmy. “Good employers create room for tailored solutions and understanding.”
With this approach, Amsterdam aims to contribute to a fairer and more inclusive working environment while helping to break the taboo surrounding menstruation symptoms.
