Itay Garmy
βTrust in politics has to become central again. Also in Amsterdam. Through accessible democracy and a clear, positive narrative, we can put trust back at the centre.β

Itay grew up in Amstelveen and, via some detours, ended up a little further up the road in Amsterdam. His family's roots reach as far as Brazil, Yemen, Israel and Germany. He sees this mix of different colours and identities reflected in the city. Itay is committed to bringing together the different identities and backgrounds that make up our city, to make them work together and form a beautiful mosaic in which every Amsterdammer comes into his own.
Why Volt?Β
ββThe reason I joined Volt is because Volt really gives young people a chance to develop politically. They listen and give you all the tools you need to become a candidate.Β
I also believe in Volt's core message: we need each other across Europe and the world to face today's challenges. We often forget that there were many wars in Europe not very long ago. Thanks to the European Union, we have lived in a largely peaceful society for years and made giant strides forward. The terrible war in Ukraine reminds us that we have to cherish this and keep working on this so that we can also face the challenges of today and the future.ββ
What do you do besides your work as a councillor?Β
ββIn addition to my work as a councillor, I am a strategic advisor to the unit leadership in the police. In this role, I advise on strengthening the links between the police and society. I mainly focus on the topics of ethics and privacy.ββ
What do you want to do for Amsterdam?Β
ββI want to show the city that there are leaders who take responsibility and can connect. Amsterdam is a beautiful city that makes me feel at home. The history of the city, hearing 60 languages, churches, mosques and synagogues, people from all over the world, the freedom of the Red Light District, the coffee shops and the nightclubs. Our city - still - breathes freedom and openness.Β
But I realise that freedom cannot be taken for granted and that not everyone experiences it. Always being able to be who you want to be: it is for that freedom that I am committed. And with my efforts, I want to ensure that people in the city step out of their bubble, get to know the diversity of the city and that trust in each other increases.ββ
